President: Dr. Maria P. Tovar Torres, MD

Maria Tovar Torres, MD is a Sleep Medicine Physician. She obtained her medical degree from Universidad de La Sabana in her home city, Bogota. Her Internal Medicine residency was done at Indiana University and Eastern Virginia Medical School. She completed her Sleep Medicine training at the Detroit Medical Center/ Wayne State University fellowship program in 2015. Dr. Tovar Torres has a special interest in newer treatments of sleep apnea like hypoglossal and phrenic nerve stimulation. Also has developed a special interest in Central Sleep apnea. She worked for 5 years at Henry Ford Hospital, during this time was the coordinator for the medical students, residents and fellows, and developed the clinic for advanced treatment of sleep apnea.
In February 2023 Dr. Tovar Torres will be joining the Division of Sleep Medicine at the VA medical center in Detroit.

Past President: Mohan Dutt, MD

Mohan Dutt MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Department of Neurology where he practices sleep medicine. He received his bachelor’s degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan and attended medical school at Saint Georges University. He completed his internal medicine residency training in Phoenix, AZ followed by a sleep medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado/National Jewish Health. He joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 2018. Dr. Dutt’s clinical interests lie in the associations between sleep apnea and pulmonary disease, specifically pulmonary hypertension. His other interests are clinical education, technology, and content delivery. To this aim, he has created a sleep medicine focused podcast and website as a means to increase access to education.

President Elect: Vishal Saini, MD

Dr. Saini obtained his medical degree from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. His residency was done at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine; he completed his Sleep Medicine fellowship at Wayne State University Sleep fellowship program at Detroit medical center and John D. Dingell VAMC in 2014.

Dr. Saini is serving as an adjunct faculty for Central Michigan University. He has joined a busy private sleep clinic with 4 other providers in Saginaw, MI after serving and establishing sleep medicine practice at a rural hospital in Ionia, MI. He has special interest in implementing tele health solutions to improve access for patients with sleep disorders and technological advances in the field of sleep medicine.

Dr. Saini is a member of AASM and is currently part of the Conference planning committee at MASM. He is board certified in sleep medicine and family medicine. Dr. Saini is an avid golfer and lives in Saginaw, MI with his wife and 2 young kids.

Secretary & Treasurer: Soumya Madala, MD

Dr. Madala is a board certified internist and sleep medicine specialist. She graduated from medical school at Sri Devraj Urs Medical College, Karnataka, India. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program. She has been practicing sleep medicine at Mercy Health Sleep center in Grand Rapids since 2011. She has served as a Board of Director at MASM in the past. She has served the Secretary and Treasurer position since 2018.

Board Member: Gita Gupta, MD

Gita Gupta, MD is a Sleep Medicine researcher at the University of Michigan where her clinical practice focuses on pediatric and adult sleep. She received her medical degree and completed residency training in combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Wayne State University/Children’s Hospital of Michigan. She completed her Sleep Medicine fellowship at the University of Michigan. Her clinical interests include pediatric sleep disorders, early prevention of adult illness, adolescent medicine, social determinants of health, and health policy. Her research interests include studying the interface between genetics and sleep, and the sleep of infants and young children.In February 2023 Dr. Tovar Torres will be joining the Division of Sleep Medicine at the VA medical center in Detroit.

Board Member: Maren E. Hyde Nolan, PhD

Maren E. Hyde Nolan was born and raised in the Metro-Detroit area and she obtained her PhD in Clinical Health Psychology from Wayne State University in 2014. She completed internship training at the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI in 2014 and her Health Psychology fellowship at Henry Ford Health System in 2015.

Dr. Hyde-Nolan has been on staff with the Division of Sleep medicine for Henry Ford Health System since 2015, specializing in Behavioral Sleep medicine. Her particular interest is in treating insomnia with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-Insomnia) especially with complex patient populations. She enjoys teaching and taking an active role in training fellows in behavioral sleep techniques.

Board Member: Anjoo Chaudhry Ely, DDS, DABDSM

Dr. Ely is a Diplomate for both the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and the American Sleep and Breathing Academy and is on staff with St. John’s Providence Hospital. She attended the University of Michigan, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1997. She is an active member of the Detroit District Dental Society, American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association and American Association of Orofacial Pain.
